10 ways to spot a traitor in The Traitors reality TV show

The Traitors is a now legendary reality TV show where contestants must outwit, outplay, and outlast their opponents in order to win a substantial cash prize. The show was launched in Holland, given wings in Australia, went supersonic in the UK and then flew across the pond...

As you may have already guessed, traitors exist in the game and can ruin it for the other players, known as faithfuls. In fact, it turns out that faithfuls are not very good at all at spotting traitors and this is what makes it such unmissable television. If you've been out in the cold for a while, televisually speaking, do yourself a favour and watch the show! It has made converts of hardened reality TV sceptics.

On the other hand, if you've already filled out your application to be a contestant in season 2 here are 10 ways to spot a traitor in The Traitors reality show before it’s too late...

1. Vote out the nicest people first. It’s brutal but a traitor will make sure they are a friend to everyone, whereas faithfuls often have no compunction about saying who they dislike.

2. Look for someone who waits to see what the group opinion is and then leans into it.

3. Look for someone who tells you their opinion first but is careful not to lay it on too thickly if you push back.

4. This is a risky strategy but it could pay off: catch the traitor out by expressing ridiculous and unfounded reservations about another contestant. A traitor is less likely to flatly contradict you, as they will be thinking about how they can turn this to their advantage. If the person who you expressed reservations about confronts you just tell them you were laying a trap for a traitor, so it’s a trap that can only be used once.

5. Look for someone who keeps repeating that they are 100% a faithful. You’re either a faithful or a traitor, and this is a clear example of ‘the traitor doth protest too much’, to paraphrase Shakespeare. Of course, faithfuls may use this phrase but they should be banished for doing so.

6. Look for someone who has twice as much energy as anyone else. A traitor will try to distract you by being super pumped up about being a faithful, which they most certainly are not.

7. Look for someone who always acts as you would expect them to. A traitor tries to blend in all the time but a faithful acts more naturally and will seem to act strangely at times.

8. Never trust anyone. But most of all, don’t trust anyone who thinks they deserve your trust.

9. Pick people at random to vote out, rather than going with the herd if you’re stuck on who to banish. People vote with the herd for self-preservation but if you let it be known that you are picking at random it won’t be held against you.

10. As the cast narrows down it gets harder for the traitors to mask their identity. Make sure you don’t put a target on your back before you even get to this point by being shown to have influence over other faithfuls, being too smart or too likeable. The faithfuls, who in reality are traitors too, must remember to look out for themselves and do what it takes to stay in the game.

I hope you enjoyed my top 10 ways to identify a traitor (and my first top 10 list). What are yours? My list is a straight shoot from the hip based on my impressions, having enjoyed the UK and US versions of the show and then enjoyed the banter on Twitter afterwards.
